VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The Windy Point Swim Team depends on parent volunteers to run all meets both home and away. No parent is expected to be an expert, but all parents are expected to help during each meet as needed. When you help the swim team, you are helping kids learn, grow and have fun! Every effort will be made to place volunteers in their preferred role. Detailed job descriptions are available below.
When jobs are assigned, each family will receive a reminder notice via email detailing their job assignment, date of the meet and time frame needed. This will be your ONLY notification, so it is extremely important to make sure you provide the coordinators with a valid email and update them should it change during the season. A master job list will also be posted on the swim team bulletin board at the pool.
If a volunteer cannot help at their assigned meet, they are required to find a replacement. If a volunteer needs to switch a job assignment, the volunteer is expected to check the master list and work it out with another parent or find a replacement prior to the meet. The coaches and swim team coordinators will not be responsible for making adjustments for parents. The volunteer MUST notify the agreed change to Celinda Cernigliaro @ ccernigliaro@cox.net so the master list can be udpated, or leave a note of the agreed change in the Team Coordinator's communication folder located at the front desk at the pool.
Volunteers who fail to find a replacement or are a "no-show" will incur a $50 fine before the volunteer's children will be allowed to swim again. We would much rather see parents help their child's team than collect a fine.
Job descriptions are as follows:
Meet Director/Referee*: Responsible for the set up, management and overall operation of home meets.Works with the referee, coaches and swim team coordinators to insure that meets run smoothly. Starter*: The official who starts/annouces each heat of home meets. Hospitality: Provides drinks for our volunteers during meets. Ribbon Writers: Sits at score table and records official place times on ribbons during meets. Scoring: Reviews and determines official swim times from score cards after each race, certify those times, records results and keeps score during the meet. Clerk of Course: Gathers all of our 8 & under swimmers to their lanes for their correct heats. Helps in assigning the exhibition swimmers to lanes and organizing timer cards prior to the meet. Stroke & Turn Judges*: Swim officials trained in stroke, turn & finish guidelines. Judge swimmers during each race to insure strokes, turns and finishes conform to VPSU rules. Runners: Collects cards from each lane after each event/heat and delivers them to those at the scoring table. Deliver DQ (disqualification) cards from the Referee to the scoring table. Timers (3 per lane): Uses stopwatch to get accurate times for each swimmer. Timers will record all times for each heat and give the cards to the Runners. Sweep Judges: Sits at the finish and records visual finishes by lane on a card to be picked up by Runners. Meet Set/Up: Sets up scoring table, coaches chairs, starting blocks, 8 & under chairs and basically makes sure the meet is ready to go and provide an extra set of "hands" to the swim team coordinators. Meet Break/Down: Insures that the pool will be operational the next day after a meet. Chairs put away, trash, etc.
Those jobs with an * are considered officials and will need to attend a GPSA Officials Clinic. We encourage ALL parents to make time to attend one as the more we have certified, the less those have to work! Please view the below schedule and contact Connie to secure a spot.
